Shaft Of Instruments

Shaft is the mid-portion of the hand held instruments that extends the tip away from the joint and terminates inside the handle. The function of shaft is to transmit the force required to open and close the instrument. This very fact necessitates it being strong enough to withstand the force that the tip has to encounter when cutting into comparatively harder tissue. Typically, shaft consists of two parts, namely outer and inner shaft. Generally the outer haft is fixed and the inner one is movable. It is the inner shaft that moves in accordance with the movements of the handle. The strength of the entire instrument is also very dependant on the strength of the shaft. It is very essential that the shaft is geared up to bear the force that is required while resecting menisci.
